Although it is recommended to implement antibacterial therapy only after doing an antibiogram, often it is necessary to begin treatment before the antibiogram has been concluded. Ampicillin is a very suitable antibiotic for this kind of situations, as it acts very well on gram-negative micro-organisms, gram-positive bacteria, and some strains of Escerichia coli, and Salmonella as well. In these two latter cases, high doses must be applied.
Ampicillin is a betalactamic antibiotic which belongs to aminopenicillin group that acts by inhibiting mucopeptide synthesis of bacteria cell wall. Although aminopenicillins can be administrated orally due to the fact that they are stable in the acid medium of stomach, ampicillin generally produces diarrhoea because it does not have a high absorption rate, so that we prefer the parenteral (intravenous or intramuscular) presentation. It has a bioavailability of about 100%.
